BS(p)2026 @ Balades Sonores : Sara Mokrani (FR-DZ / modular_synth-ambient) en showcase
Sara is a French-Algerian composer and sound designer who explores generative sounds
created from modular synths along with dreamy melodies played on organs, piano and
flutes. Inspired by medieval harmonies, her practice focuses on complex sequencing
techniques and pattern-based melodies that lead to a minimalist sound architecture
allowing us to explore our deepest selves.
Bismillah was written in a small house surrounded by the French forest of Montmirail. The composition is built around modular
synths, field recordings and a diy electric organon found by the artist in the nearest village.
In Sara’s work, organ ambient’s tones meet a lyrical introspection, articulated with precision and vulnerability. The slow
permutation of patterns create an atmosphere where time and space are melt in a pure, constant present. Inspired by the pastoral
landscape around, the composition technique used to sequence the modules feels almost natural, human. Responding to the echo
of blackbird’s singing melodies, the sound cycles are more and more complex as the album goes, with a focus on diy drum
machines loops and distorted field recordings adding unpredictable counterpoint to the tracks.
Embodied by the bushes, trees, and owl shadows of the cover photography — taken in the very place the album was composed—
simple melodies come and go inviting surreal creatures to come out of the forest and meet our purest emotions.
